Zippo Sets Digital Marketing World on Fire

The iPhone app for the Zippo windproof lighter was named as a finalist for Fifth Annual Global Mobile award by the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA). As the MMA’s highest honor, the award recognize companies for spearheading the adoption of the mobile channel for marketing purposes.
The Virtual Zippo Lighter iPhone application was launched in 2008. It was created by Zippo in
conjunction with digital developer Moderati of San Francisco. The app brings the look and feel of Zippo’s iconic lighter to the iPhone with interactive actions that mimic the real thing. It opens with a flick of the wrist and lights with a turn of the flint wheel. To add even more realistic features, the windproof flame sways as the device is moved back and forth. The application has been the number one free corporate iPhone app for most of 2009.
In October, the app surpassed the mark of over six million downloads by owners of Apple iPhones and iPod Touch devices. The Zippo app has been so successful that it was featured in an Apple iPhone television advertisement. With more than 75,000 applications in the app store, Zippo joined elite company of only around 200 apps that have been shown in Apple commercials.
The MMA tribute represents the fourth digital marketing accolade awarded to Zippo recently. Other recent awards include DM2’s MOBI Award and the Interactive Advertising Bureau’s MIXX Award, both for the Virtual Zippo iPhone application. The Web Marketing Association’s WebAward was given to Zippo for the new microsite, ZippoEncore.com for Outstanding Achievement in Web Development.
ZippoEncore.com, the microsite launched in April in partnership with Rolling Stone Magazine, celebrates the longstanding connection Zippo has with rock music. ZippoEncore.com has featured bands like Shinedown and Boys Like Girls. Users can download exclusive music tracks and access a band photo gallery, interviews, band member playlists and blogs, wallpapers, Windows skins and start a discussion on the message board. Visitors can also create their own unique rock-and-roll avatar by scrolling through distinct body types and Zippo lighters serving as an avatar’s head. Once the avatar is complete, it can be shared with friends or used as a profile picture on a social network. The avatar lighters can also be purchased in Zippo’s official online store.
