Why does Zippo recommend premium grade butane for use in the MPL?

Zippo Premium Butane FuelWe have received complaints from consumers about some brands of butane fuel affecting the performance of their MPL. After investigation, Zippo determined that some imported butane fuels contain very high pressure fuel or contaminants that could cause flaring, permanent damage or malfunction of the MPL.

Butane fuel with too much pressure could cause the flame height to exceed recommended maximums. If the flame height of your Zippo MPL exceeds 4 inches, try refilling it with Zippo Premium Butane. If this does not reduce the flame height to less than 4 inches, stop using the lighter and send it to Zippo for repair.

We recommend the use of only Zippo Premium Butane in Zippo butane lighters. The formula for Zippo Premium Butane was recently adjusted to improve ignition, and overall performance. Zippo Premium Butane now has a mid-level of pressure among the broad range of butane fuels sold in the U.S. Use of this fuel in models of the Zippo MPL sold from 2002 to 2005 could cause them to have a slightly increased flame height, though still well within the range of safety, which is a maximum of 4 inches. If you notice an increased flame height after refilling with Zippo Premium Butane, use the black adjustment knob to reduce it. If it still has an excessive flame height, return to Zippo for repair.
